Everything changes, and nothing at all. Their classes are the same, and their friends are the same, and they look just the same – except that Sirius intertwines their fingers under the table during Potion, and they sneak away from James and Peter on free periods to ‘study’, and somehow Remus starts wearing Sirius’ old, ratty Muggle hoodie at weekends, and one day – when Sirius has caught hold of his hand on the way to class, dragging him into an alcove and kissing him thoroughly, “just because” – Lily tells him that he’s glowing.
I utterly love this paragraph, not a little bit because it perfectly describes how my relationship with my best friend changed when we started dating - even the "glowing" and the hoodie! Now he's my husband! This entire fic was so sweet and perfectly captures the uncertainty and excitement of new-found relationships - I really really enjoyed it.
This is a sweet, loving story. Thank you so much for writing it! I can feel the warmth of their love for each other through your words.
What a lovely, almost delicate story. You really capture the breathless feel of being in love for the first time. :-)
A lovely tale about attraction, need, comfort and love all wrapped up in the person of your very, best friend. The way you tell it is particularly beguiling! &hearts
I was really struck by this though, a gentle reminder that theirs was not an easy path:
“We must be nuts,” Sirius whispers one night, when some Hufflepuff produces a Muggle newspaper, motionless pictures and monochrome text, and two gay men have been beaten to death for holding hands in public and someone from Ravenclaw laughs. Remus doesn’t catch hold of his hand, throat tight, eyes bright, and doesn’t quite dare to protest.
In the early morning hours, when Remus is lying still and awake in what he now secretly considers their bed, Sirius turns towards him and raises his hand, cupping the line of Remus’ jaw, the light scrape of stubble making his lips twitch into the ghost of a smile.
“I don’t really think we are, you know,” he barely whispers, solemn again, “Nuts. We’re... we’re not.” His eyes are shining, and Remus – hearing what he doesn’t say – nods. He has to close his own eyes for a moment, clenching one of his hands in the messy, dark hair at the nape of Sirius’ neck, before he leans up to press their lips together.
That night, Remus sleeps holding Sirius’ hand.
Such sweetness to your tale....
